Fake Extortion Email; Tech Support Scams

There’s a new scam email that I want you to be aware of. The subject line has a real password that you’ve used in the past, and claims to have video of you viewing pornography. The sender demands money in exchange for keeping quiet.

While the password is one you did use at some point, (hopefully not one you’re using now), you should not fall for the scam and pay the sender! Just ignore the email.

Your password was likely obtained from one of the many large hacks that have occurred over the years.

If, for some reason, you are using that password anywhere, please change it immediately, so it can’t be used by the bad guys.

Don’t fall for phone calls, pop-ups or emails claiming to be from a legitimate source, saying your computer network, phone, etc. is compromised.

The bad guys claim that your computer is compromised, and that they will help you take care of the problem-usually, but not always-for money. They often throw legitimate technical terms at you to try to scare you “your IP has been compromised”, Your computer is being used to hack…”, etc.

Even if they don’t ask you for money, they may just want to access your computer to install a password-stealing program.

The best thing to do is simply hang up-no matter what they say-it’s a lie. Feel free to forward us pictures of any suspicious pop-ups, and tell the person to call you back the following day. In the meantime, check with us and we’ll confirm the information-no charge.

All the best,

Edward
