Technical Tip: How to Reduce Email Spam
What is Spam?
Spam is email that you did not ask for, that tries to sell you something (officially called UCE, or Unsolicited Commercial Email). Spam is a growing problem, representing approximately 40% of all email messages received. Many people are now receiving between 50-100 spam messages per day, and it’s a major pain and waste of time to deal with it.
What can be done to reduce/eliminate Spam?
1. Don’t Respond!
Q: In many of the Spam messages I receive, there’s a link I can click to unsubscribe. Should I click the link?
A: No! By responding, all you’re doing is giving the spammer a legitimate email address, which they can sell to other spammers, who’ll send you even more Spam.
2. Use a Whitelist and a Blacklist
A whitelist is a list of email senders you want to receive email from. A blacklist is a list of email senders you do not wish to receive email from. Whitelists and blacklists are simple to create and maintain.
3. Use Anti-Spam tools
There are lots of tools available that can help manage Spam. Notice I didn’t say eliminate Spam. The people who create Spam–Spammers, are very creative. They constantly change their methods to elude anti-spam tools.
Anti-spam programs examine each message you receive and try to determine which messages are spam. Any messages the program thinks are spam are moved to a folder for your review. These programs are not perfect: since you don’t want to delete legitimate messages, you have to look through each message before deleting it. While this process takes a lot of time, it’s the only surefire way to ensure you’re not deleting legitimate messages.
There are lots of anti-spam tools on the market including Mail Washer, I Hate Spam, SpamNet, Norton Internet Security, and others. We use the free version of SpamNet, and it works fairly well. SpamNet catches about 75% of the spam we get.
